Facebook-owned WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps out there, even though it lacks behind on certain functionalities introduced by its competitors such as Telegram. WhatsApp packs in almost all the features most users need in a messenger, including support for statuses, group messages, and more. Facebook has also shown keen interest on keeping WhatsApp updated with new features, original or otherwise, allowing the app to retain its existing userbase. Features like fingerprint unlock, Boomerang-like looped videos, profile QR codes, animated stickers, and more have been spotted in previous Betas. Now, WhatsApp for Android Beta v2.19.275 indicates that the app will soon allow users to send disappearing/expiring messages to each other.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the latest beta update for WhatsApp (v2.19.275) on Android hints at a new feature currently in the works which will allow users to send messages that disappear from the chat after a set period of time. As shown in the screenshot below, the new feature can be found within the Group settings and allows users to send messages that disappear after a set time interval.

The setting brings up a pop-up window which allows you to customize the message expiration time, with the option to choose between either 5 seconds or 1 hour. Once the feature is enabled, any message sent in that WhatsApp group will automatically be removed after the stipulated time period. And unlike the delete for all feature, which leaves behind a trail once removed, the disappearing messages reportedly leave no signs whatsoever.

As of now, the feature is in its early stages of development and it’s not available for users. There’s no word from WhatsApp regarding a release date or whether the feature will be limited to group chats or whether it will also be for private chats. We can expect this feature to make its way to an official release in the future.
