Hello Mi Fans,
Hope you guys are having loads of fun here in our Mi Community. After a short gap, we are again back with the Tech Class session.
In today's 'Tech Class Chapter' we will know more about Airplane mode and why it is used in smartphones.

What is Airplane Mode?
Airplane mode is a setting on your phone that lets you to turn off the cellular connection, Wi-Fi, FM radio and Bluetooth on your phone simultaneously. This way you can use other apps that don't require a cellular connection. Regulations in many countries prohibit the use of devices that transmit signals on commercial aircraft. A typical phone or cellular-enabled tablet is communicating with several cell towers and attempting to maintain a connection at all times. If the towers are far away, the phone or tablet has to boost its signal so it can communicate with the towers. This sort of communication could interfere with an airplane’s sensors and potentially cause issues with sensitive navigation equipment. That’s a concern that brought these laws about, anyway. In reality, modern equipment is robust. Even if this does cause problems, your plane won’t fall out of the sky because a few people forgot to enable airplane mode.

How to Turn Airplane Mode On or Off
To enable or disable airplane mode on your Android device, follow these steps:
  • Swipe down from the top of the screen two times to open the Quick Settings panel.
  • Look for the Airplane mode toggle in the grid.
  • Tap it onceand now your phone enters airplane mode.
  • Repeat these steps to disable airplane mode. Note that it may take your phone a moment to reconnect to Wi-Fi and cellular data after leaving airplane mode. If your phone doesn’t have this shortcut for some reason, you can toggle airplane mode at Settings  Network & internet  Airplane mod
Airplane mode disables the same hardware functions such as:
Cellular:Your device will stop communicating with cell towers. You won’t be able to send or receive anything that depends on cellular data, from voice calls and SMS messages to mobile data.

Wi-Fi:Your phone will stop scanning for nearby Wi-Fi networks and attempting to join them. If you’re already connected to a Wi-Fi network, you’ll be disconnected, but in newer device models you can enable back the Wi-Fi manually back

Bluetooth:Airplane mode also disables Bluetooth, a wireless communication technology most people associate with wireless headsets. But Bluetooth can be used for many other things, including keyboards and mice.

GPS:Airplane mode also disables GPS-receiving functions, but only on some devices. This is a bit confusing and inconsistent. In theory, GPS is unlike all the other technologies here a device with GPS turned on is only listening to GPS signals it receives, not transmitting any signals. However, some aircraft regulations do not allow the use of GPS-receiving functions for some reason.

Why airlines ask you to put your phone on "Airplane Mode”?
  • We’re asked to turn our devices off or to flight mode because of electromagnetic interference from phones, tablets, e-readers, electronic headsets, and more.
  • Since some planes were built before these became a thing, it took a while for the industry to make sure it was entirely safe to use them.
  • Most of us believe that it's just a procedure and not following it will do nothing, while some of us are sure that the plane will just crash and everybody will die. The truth is, both the assumptions are incorrect.
  • Till date, there is no such evidence that proves that, if not switched to flight mode, signals from your cell phone can cause a plane's malfunction leading it to a crash.
  • In short, no plane crash has ever happened because a passenger forgot to switch his cell phone to flight mode. There are multiple reasons for the safety concern.
  • As you are travelling very fast, and are more than 10,000 feet in the air, the phone signals will try to connect to various towers and will send out stronger signals because the weaker the signals your cell phone picks up from the tower, the stronger the signals it sends out to try and get a response.
  • Basically, your cell phone communicates with several cell towers and attempts to maintain a connection at all times and if the towers are far away, the phone will boost its signal so it can keep communicating with the towers.
  • This has a potential to interfere with the cellular signals on the ground.
  • Another important reason why you need to switch your phone to flight mode is because you don't want to annoy the pilots.
  • You may have heard the unpleasant noise from an audio system, that occasionally happens when a mobile phone is nearby, right? A phone’s radio emissions can be very strong and can go up to 8W which causes this noise due to parasitic demodulation.
  • Now imagine that noise on the pilot's headset, while he is receiving a critical information from ground contro
Other uses of Airplane mode
  • Save some battery life

The biggest battery hogs inside your phone are typically its display and wireless radio antennas (Wi-Fi and cellular). So, if you need to stretch the battery life of your phone, switching Airplane mode on can help. If you do this, you could save 8 percent battery life compared to a phone without Airplane mode on. This can be especially useful if you’re in an area with poor cellular or Wi-Fi connections, when those antennas are working overtime to make sure your phone is connected to stable network tower
  • Charge your phone faster
Many new phones these days come with quick chargers, which can juice up our device in an hour or less.Switching on Airplane mode will help you out there. With its Wi-Fi and cellular antennas switched off, your phone will be using less energy, which means more will go towards replenishing its battery stores. (For even faster charging, you can also turn your phone off.
  • Avoid distractions
For many of us, a smartphone is a constant source of distraction. Emails, calls, Snapchats, and special offers crowd our home screens and mean we're checking our devices more than we really should. There are various ways to tackle this problem, from putting your phone in a drawer to switching off notifications, but Airplane mode has a number of advantages

Conclusion
Airplane mode is one of the most widely misunderstood features on modern smartphones phones. Some people still believe that it is necessary to keep aircraft from spontaneously combusting, while others simply don't know that it exists. But once you have a good idea of how to use it, it can become an essential tool especially in emergencies. It can keep your battery more full, and recharge it faster.
