[News] ExaDrive DC 100 TB : World's Largest Capacity SSD Launched By Nimbus!!

Hey, Mi Fans!

I'm back with one more interesting news, specially for those who needs huge storage for their data! It hasn’t even been a month since Samsung unveiled the world’s largest capacity SSD at 30TB, and it’s already been ousted from the top spot by Nimbus Data, a flash memory hardware company from Irvine, California. Nimbus Data has quickly smashed Samsung's benchmark launching the ExaDrive DC100 – a 3.5 inch SSD drive unit with a massive 100 TB capacity. This Nimbus ExaDrive DC lineup will consist of two models featuring 50 TB and 100 TB capacities This awesome device has just launched yesterday and I'm gonna discuss everything about it in this thread. So, let's get started.

Design:
  • The ExaDrive DC100 has been designed for data center duty, but it still offers a traditional SATA interface (along with SAS), and is available in a 3.5-inch form-factor. That means that you could technically fit this SSD in your gaming rig.
  • The ExaDrive DC-series SSDs are based on Nimbus’ proprietary architecture, featuring four custom NAND controllers and a management processor. The drives use 3D MLC NAND flash memory made by SK Hynix in proprietary packaging. Nimbus does not disclose the ECC mechanism supported by the controllers, but keeping in mind that we are dealing with a 3D MLC-based device, it does not need a very strong ECC for maximum endurance.

  • In addition to boasting that it is the world’s largest SSD, Nimbus also boasts that the device is the world’s most energy efficient SSD where it draws as little as 0.1 Watts per TB. Apparently this makes it about 80-90% lower than the competition which means that it can store more data but use less energy, making it ideal for server farms that need to be run 24/7.
  • The drive comes with four internal controllers arranged in an ECC alignment along with a central control processor that orchestrates data traffic.
  • Unlike Samsung's earlier effort, which offered impressive capacity alongside ultra-fast read and write speeds, the DC100 is engineered to prioritize capacity over everything else. The device only reaches 100,000 IOps (read or write) and up to 500 MBps throughput. These are relatively modest stats, but the drive is marketed at enterprise customers including giant data centers looking to reduce rack space and power costs.

Specifications:

Features:
  • So what does 100TB of SSD storage give you? Nimbus Data claims it can store up to 20 million songs or 20,000 HD movies, but unlike the normal SATA SSDs in your PC, this model comes in the 3.5" form factor, meaning it is the size of a standard hard drive.

  • The company boasts that it has triple the capacity of its closest competitor on the market, and it draws 85% less power per terabyte.
  • The ExaDrive DC100 (which will also be offered in a 50TB flavor) has a five year warranty  is guaranteed for ‘unlimited endurance’ during that period. The drive has a mean time between failures of 2.5 million hours.
  • The ExaDrive DC100 provides up to 100,000 random read and write IOPS. The DC100's random read IOPS are slightly higher than most enterprise SATA SSDs, but its random write performance is in a league of its own compared to other SATA SSDs.

  • The drive also sports up to 500 MB/s of sequential read and write throughput, which is comparable to the fastest enterprise SATA SSDs. The DC100's write speed is fast for a SATA SSDs, but it isn't enough to wear down the huge helping of flash over the five-year warranty period.
  • Nimbus Data gears the drive for hyperscalers, such as Google, Facebook, Baidu, and others, so power efficiency is another key metric. The company claims the DC100 is the world's most energy efficient SSD, which is a hard claim to fact check. In either case, it only draws 0.09W to 0.14W-per-TB, which is lower than many competing SSDs. That works out to 9W of idle power consumption and a 14W typical rating.

Superior Reliability and Complete Data Protection:
  • The ExaDrive DC100 is protected by an unlimited endurance guarantee for 5 years. By doing away with confusing drive-writes-per-day restrictions, the DC100 offers peace of mind, reduces hardware refresh cycles, and eliminates costly support renewals. Embedded capacitors ensure that buffered data is safely protected if there is a sudden power loss.

Availability And Pricing:
  • The ExaDrive DC series includes both 100 TB and 50 TB models. It is currently sampling to strategic customers and will be generally available in summer 2018. Nimbus Data has qualified the DC series in storage and server enclosures from major vendors. Pricing will be similar to existing enterprise SSDs on a per terabyte basis while offering 85% lower operating costs. Overall, the ExaDrive DC series will cost 42% less per terabyte over a 5-year period compared to existing enterprise SSDs.

My Verdict:
In My Opinion, This Awesome gadget has advantage factors in the superior endurance, balanced read/write performance, power savings, cooling savings, rack space savings, component reduction, and lower refresh costs. To defeat big brands in technology factor is really something! Really is a gift for those who needs greater storage and are willing to pay for it. Let's see how does this device rocks once it's launched.

Let me know your views about this cool gadget by commenting in the comment section below. I'll meet you tomorrow with another interesting topic. Till Then, tc and be updated with Technology!
