HI MI FANS,|
Today I’m back with yet another interesting tech news. On May 12, Google is ending support for its Google Drive software for Windows and macOS (the change was originally scheduled for March 12 but has been pushed back). Let’s see more about this tech news. So, let's get started with this thread.
The aging Google Drive app for desktop is officially deprecated as of today, Google announced in a blog post. Support will be cut off and the app will shut down completely on May 12th, 2018. Users who are still running the Drive app will start seeing notifications that it’s “going away,” and the company will steer customers towards one of two replacements depending on whether they’re a consumer or business user. Google Drive the service isn’t going anywhere. You can still access it from the web, smartphone apps, and either of the software options mentioned.
Home users can replace their Drive clients for Windows and macOS with a new tool called Backup & Sync, which Google announced back in July. It doesn't differ too much from the old applications, but it does provide more comprehensive backup for your whole computer. As with the old Google Drive client, Backup & Sync lets you choose specific folders from Google Drive to sync to your computer, so you don't have to have everything on your desktop or laptop at once. In addition, the new tool lets you upload files from outside your designated local Google Drive folder—so you can back up your Desktop or Documents folder without moving those files to the Google Drive folder. Previously, Drive and Photos had separate desktop apps for syncing. One of the new program's perks is that it combines the two: Backup & Sync lets you upload pictures to Google Photos as well as files to Google Drive.
Google says that the old Drive app will stop working on 12 May, so if you want files to continue to sync you’ll need to install the new Backup & Sync app. You should see a prompt next time you boot up your computer, assuming you haven’t disabled Google Drive from auto-starting with Windows. In any case, you can download Backup & Sync from Google’s website. Installing it is just as simple as the original Google Drive. Below is the official statement by Google.
There are some differences between the apps; both can do one or two things that the other can’t, so check out Google’s help pages to see which the better fit is. For most people the Backup and Sync option is probably it, though power users have complained about its lack of support for NAS drives.
