[Feature Review] MIUI 10: An Innovation on full screen display

Hello, Mi Fans!
MIUI Design team has been thinking about a mobile operating system full-screen devices would really deserve since we launched Mi MIX. However, MIUI is used by millions of people, and every straightforward change would drastically change the way people use their devices. That’s why we decided to take a step-by-step approach.

The advantage of a full-screen device is that content can make use of the additional space and truly take the front stage on them. Replacing buttons with
gestures sounds like a great idea which allows to free up some space. But it’s not as easy as it may seem: too many people are used to navigation buttons and that feeling of “giving confirmation” every time you tap them.

In MIUI 9, we introduced Quick ball which gave much more options for interacting with the screen. Animated icons, in their turn, signified every action with a satisfying movement, giving our users that feeling of “confirmation”. This gave us a major foundation for introducing full-screen gestures which were subsequently welcomed by lots and lots of users. We introduce a new gesture as well: now you can switch between apps by simply swiping from the edge across the screen. Recents look completely different in MIUI 10. Major mobile operating systems

Our new design language brings you the best full-screen experience. The background expands to the whole screen, and cards with rounded corners layer
up above it, giving you the feeling of structure. The spaces between the elements make the layout light and airy while signifying the transitions from item to item.

If you think about the time of the day when you use the Clock app, a new black background might seem much more suitable. Clock app is now much more
straightforward: distinct labels minimize the time between you opening the app and setting an alarm or a timer. Besides that, time zones look much more
informative with a map.

Panels for adjusting volume and brightness have also been revamped. Instead of dragging a dot along the line, you can slide left or right at any place of the panel. The panel was also enlarged, so it’s much easier to control volume and brightness quickly.

When you hold your phone vertically, press the volume button, and you’ll see how Volume adjustment panel appears next to where physical buttons are, which brings software closer to hardware and makes it more intuitive. A larger touch panel allows faster interaction. When you play videos horizontally, volume adjustment panel will still appear on the right side of the screen, just as if you were holding your device vertically.

Organize items in Recents in three ways: overlapping horizontally, not overlapping horizontally, and overlapping vertically. Overlapping items don’t allow you to view content quickly, you are supposed to spend some time tapping a particular item and opening the app. Besides that, organizing items horizontally don’t allow you to use all the additional space a full-screen device gives you. MIUI 10 groups recent apps in a vertical feed, scrolling through which seems like a natural and intuitive transition of opening Recents using a full-screen gesture. It might take some time for you to get used to, but after a while, you’ll see how time-saving and convenient new Recents are.

Themes and icons will still look familiar to you. However, new colors and shapes will give MIUI 10 a much fresher look.
