Smartphones Displays are compared based on Resolution i.e, HD, HD+, Full HD, 2K, 4K or the type of Display Panels TFT, IPS, AMOLED, Super AMOLED etc. Similarly, we often see them being compared on the basis of Pixel Density. Today, We will be learning about Pixel Density in smartphones, without wasting time let's get into it.
What is Pixel Density?
Pixel Density can be referred to as how close pixels are packed in a smartphone display. In smartphones, it is commonly measured in Pixels Per Inch or ppi. PPI is the relation between Screen Size and Resolution of the phone. In general higher the ppi the crispier the screen.
How to Calculate PPI?
1. Check what is the diagonal size of your smartphone. Let's say it is equal to 5 inches.
2. Write down the vertical and horizontal pixel count. Let's assume they are equal 640 and 480 pixels respectively.
3. Calculate the number of pixels along the diagonal:
dₒ = √(w² + h²) = √(480² + 640²) = √640,000 = 800
4. Calculate the PPI according to the formula written above:
PPI = dₒ/dᵢ = 800/5 = 160
The relation between Resolution, Screen Size, and Pixel Density
If we have two displays with the same resolution, the smaller one will have the higher pixel density. And if we have displays with the same size, the one with a higher resolution will have the higher pixel density. So it's clear that the two parameters that we need in order to calculate the pixel density are display size and resolution. For eg, the Pixel Density of larger Mi Max 2 is around 342 PPI whereas, smaller Mi 5 has Pixel Density of 428 PPI. Both having Full HD resolution. In case of different resolution, Mi Max with Full HD display has more ppi than the HD+ resolution of the Redmi 5 with 282 PPI density.
Should it matter to You?
Yes, the pixel density matters to a certain limit while buying a smartphone, because buying a device with too low of ppi density would ruin the display experience. But at the same time, there is no point in looking for a device with unusually high ppi as “The human eye can only resolve details up to a certain limit. Someone with 20/20 vision could resolve details up to 300ppi when their phone is held at a distance of 2.5ft (76cm). At a viewing distance of 1ft (30cm), this increases to 720ppi.”
So, while considering buying you can check if it has a Pixel Density of 300 ppi or more, at least when it comes to the costlier devices. As in smartphones with low Pixel density may produce poor quality images and text readability will also be limited. Do remember at the same time the smartphones with ridiculously high Pixel Density would not make much of a difference other than making the device costlier.
