Hello Mi fans
Welcome to the What If? series. In this series, we will discuss what users think of having the latest technology and innovations which make you rethink your opinions if you had anything before.
These days the trends in smartphones are changing very rapidly, every day we can see some new concepts. Like last year, many devices were having a notch and lacking a headphone jack. The same is the case for internal storage in the smartphone. Nowadays we can see a list of smartphones with a good amount of storage. Even the budget segment devices have at least 32 GB inbuilt but most of the smartphones come with a larger amount of inbuilt storage capacity so there is very little need to having an SD card slot on our devices.
What is an SD card?
A Storage Digital card is a device used as an external storage alternative or as expandable storage in smartphones. They are small and portable making them as best secondary storage device starting from 512 MB, they can store up to 1 TB of storage capacity with the maximum write speed of 160 MB/s.
Do we need SD card slots on the present day
Presently there are varieties of smartphones available in the market. Some have either a hybrid slot or a dedicated slot. Most flagships are missing the SD card slots (neither dedicated nor hybrid).
Also due to the internet revolution in India, people prefer streaming content rather than downloading it. Thus reducing the use of storage devices.
Advantages of having SD card slot
1. Increase storage- You can increase your device storage storing all your large files on it.
2. Small and portable, can be carried easily.
3. It can be used with any smartphone, PC, media players, etc.
Limitations of having an SD card slot
1. SD cards aren't reliable.
2. Many of them get corrupted soon after purchasing them unless it's a good quality one, which means the data can be lost.
3. They are slower than built-in storage. If it's a lower class one, you'll not get higher frame rates in a high- resolution video. Also one will experience slower app loading if he has moved the apps to SD Card.
There was a time when we used to have 4/8 Gigs of storage and we used SD cards on smartphones to keep all our stuff. But that was a thing of the past. Cloud computing has changed many things, people prefer streaming and keeping the important backups of data on the cloud. Also removing the SD card slots will give manufacturers more space for adding other features. Analyzing the latest trends, soon there will be smartphones in the market which will have more storage space than our personal computers.
