HI MI FANS,|
Today i'm back with yet another tech product. A German engineering student has invented a 'mobile airbag' case design that automatically deploys when a phone is dropped. ADcase is still at concept stage, but hopefully the final design doesn’t add significant bulk to the phone. Let's see more ADcase in this thread. So let's get started with this thread.
It's a fear many smartphone users are familiar with — the panic that consumes your body as you watch your phone drop to the ground, praying the screen isn't cracked as you turn the device over. Philip Frenzel, a 25-year-old master's student at Aalen University in Germany, knew the feeling all too well. So, he decided to create a product to help prevent any damage from occurring. He calls it the "mobile airbag," formally known as the "active damping" case. The case, which took Frenzel four years to design, is equipped with sensors that detect when a phone is falling. When the sensors activate, they trigger four springs — located on each corner of the case — to unfold and poke out in two directions, preventing the phone from hitting the ground.

The sensors present in the 'mobile airbag' case prompts the release of four springs that cause the phone to bounce when it hits the ground, giving higher chances of avoiding scrapes and cracks. The dampers in the case are pushed into an 'airbag' position with metal springs, and they essentially help in absorbing the impact of the fall. Once deployed, the dampers can be pushed back into the case, meaning you can use it again. Once those metal springs are deployed, they can be pushed back into the case, it is completely reusable. One thing though, we are not sure that this case can help protect the phone that fall into an uneven surface or jagged edge.

The idea of a mobile airbag isn’t new, with Amazon having secured a patent for a design back in 2012. However, that particular design actually involved air being expelled from the product. Considering that six years later we haven’t seen any evidence of a final product along those lines, it’s safe to say that development has been shelved. This particular implementation also has its own patent secured. While the renders show the contraption being used with an iPhone, it’s unclear if any other smartphones will be supported by this unique protective case.

Notably, the 'mobile airbag' or AD case is currently not available for purchase yet. However, Frenzel has acquired a patent and also received an award from the German Society of Mechatronics for his invention. There is a video posted by public broadcaster Sudwestrundfunk, in which Frenzel demonstrates how the invention works. As per the video, the AD Case adds minimal weight to a phone while offering significant protection against drop-shock. Frenzel is reportedly planning to commercialise the case starting with a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Frenzel also won the Mechatronics Prize 2018 awarded by by German Society for Mechatronics for his work.
