Hello Mi Fans,

Sony’s smartphone division continues to turn in unimpressive performance, but the company remains the market leader in image sensors. Its latest design, the IMX586, promises a leap in image quality by dramatically increasing the resolution to 48 effective megapixels, which Sony says is the highest pixel count in the industry. While more megapixels doesn’t always mean better, it’s hard to deny the benefits of having 48 megapixels.

Highlights:-
  • Sony Corporation today announced the upcoming release of the IMX586 stacked CMOS image sensor for smartphone cameras.

  • The new sensor features 48 megapixels, the industry’s highest pixel count.

  • The new product achieved a world-first ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8 μm.

Introduction:-
Exmor is the name of a technology Sony implemented on some of their CMOS image sensors. It performs on-chip analog/digital signal conversion and two-step noise reduction in parallel on each column of the CMOS sensor.

#Sony IMX586:-
The new Sony IMX586 chip is a stacked CMOS 48MP image sensor for smartphones which rivals that of high-performance SLR cameras. The IMX586 chip features a Quad Bayer colour filter array, meaning adjacent 2×2 pixels come in the same colour, making high-sensitivity shooting possible. During low light capturing, the signal from the four adjacent pixels are added, further increasing the sensitivity to a level equivalent to that of 12 megapixels, which results in bright, low noise images. Sony exposure control technology and signal processing functionality is built into the chip.

Features:-
  • Ultra Compact Pixels: Pixel size is only 0.8μm (8mm), this smaller pixel size allows t to deliver 48 effective megapixels on a compact unit with 8.0 mm diagonal, which can be fitted on many smartphones. The increased pixel count enables high-definition imaging even on smartphones which use digital zoom.
  • Greater Dynamic Range: It uses Sony exposure control technology and signal processing functionality to offer real-time output and a superior dynamic range. Sony claims that the new sensor offers 4 times greater dynamic range than previous products.
  • Quad Bayer Filter: When shooting bright scenes such as daytime outdoors, the built-in, original signal processing function performs array conversion, making it possible to obtain high-definition 48 effective megapixel images in real time.

Conclusion:-
Image quality isn't simply a matter of adding more megapixels, it can be counterproductive, with smaller pixels leading to noisy photos in low light. The 0.8-micron pixels used in this sensor will be the smallest on the market, but Sony says it’ll get around this by using a quad Bayer color filter array. The new CMOS image sensor will start shipping in September, but it's yet unclear when we will see the first smartphones packing Sony's IMX586 sensor.
