Hello Mi Fans,
Hope you guys are having loads of fun here in Mi Community. We are again back with the Tech Class session. In today's 'Tech Class Chapter' we will know more about VoIP and how it works

What is VoIP?
VoIP is the technology that converts your voice into a digital signal, allowing you to make a call directly from a computer, a VoIP phone, or other data-driven devices. Simply put, it’s phone service delivered over the internet. You may also hear it referred to as IP telephony, internet telephony, broadband telephony, or broadband phone service. Now you can make phone calls anytime, anywhere using an Internet-connected computer, a headset, and voice over IP (VoIP).Skype is also an a VoIP and well popular among users who use it in their day today life

How it works?

VoIP functions much like any other data you send over the internet such as Slack messages or e-mail) in that it converts voice communication into data packets and sends it over an IP network. VoIP makes it unnecessary to have a traditional phone line installed in your business or home, since you can make calls using your internet connection There’s a lot more that goes into a VoIP system that makes it an ideal solution for personal and business use.One of the main benefits to using a VoIP system for your communications is that it cuts down on the number of providers and solutions you need.Rather than having a separate phone company and internet company, VoIP makes it possible to combine your voice and internet communications into the same service. It’s also much easier than traditional voice communications to scale for growth or add new features that essential to your business needs.Since VoIP runs over an IP network, all of your data is stored in the cloud and settings are accessible through a universal online dashboard or application. This dashboard allows users to access their data (contacts, phone numbers, client information), setup new call settings, and add new phone numbers, whether you’re traveling or in the office. With all communications  in one place, it’s no wonder businesses have been rapidly adopting this new technology over the past few years.
How it helps in business?
  • Grows business easily: VoIP can work with the existing communication system. You can add or remove users within the office without having to run new lines.
  • Make employees accessible, in or out of the office: If employees are working remotely at home or if they’re out and about all day, they can install the VoIP app on their cell phones or tablets. That way customers can always reach your employees via phone, voice mail over email or even voice over video conferencing.
  • Reduce phone costs: VoIP services charge a monthly fee per user, which is usually lower in price than landline service. Additionally, you don’t have to pay for long distance calls by the minute as long as those calls remain on the public or provider’s network. Calling plans are available for public switched telephone network calls (PSTN) or international calls to specific countries for a monthly charge.
  • Operate like a big business without the big cost: VoIP offers complementary features that increase employee productivity. For example, with VoIP, you get video conferencing, call recording and call forwarding to mobile devices, and can receive voicemail and faxes through email

What's required for VoIP?

You will need a broadband Internet connection, such as DSL or cable, T1 or wireless.  In most cases you will need an "always on" type of connection with a bandwidth of at least 128kbps on both upload and download for a single VoIP voice connection (an uncompressed voice connection will use approximately 90kpbs on both the upload and download.  There are connections using a compressed voice "codec" that will use less.), As long as the wireless provider's bandwidth meets the minimum requirements for the VoIP provider you choose and their connection is stable enough to offer a connection without packet loss or jitter in network
Types of VoIP
  • Peer to peer: Internet only, calls do not use the traditional telephone network, the public switched telephone network (PSTN)
  • VoIP Out: A service where calls can be made from the VoIP network to the PSTN
  • VoIP In: A service which allow calls to be made from the PSTN to the VoIP service using a telephone number
  • Two way service which allows calls to be made both ways between the VoIP service and the PSTN using telephone numbers.

Advantages of using VoIP
  • Lower monthly telephone bills; cheap Long Distance and cheap calls.
  • Unlimited monthly calling to certain locations eliminating long distance charges and plans with unlimited International calling.
  • Additional features; all included in your one monthly flat rate.
  • Lower prices on International calling.
  • Virtual numbers; numbers that ring in on a primary number and can be from other areas, even other states.
  • Portability (LNP), or the ability to take your phone service with you.

Drawbacks of VoIP
  • Audio quality - depending on your broadband connection, hardware and service you use, quality and reliability of VoIP connections may not be as good as standard phone connections. Common shortcomings experienced during calls are delays, noise and echo.
  • Bandwidth dependency - VoIP depends on your internet connection. If your connection goes down, so does your phone line. Similarly, insufficient bandwidth will likely cause quality issues with the service.
  • Security - as with other internet technologies, security is a major consideration with VoIP. Possible threats include identity and service theft, phishing, viruses and malware, spamming over internet telephony, call tempering and denial of service attacks.
  • Extra costs - if you use VoIP to phone someone without VoIP capabilities, you can incur additional costs.

Conclusion
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones is the wave of the future. As technology improves, VoIP phone systems will continue to thrive as a more efficient, cost effective way to terminate phone calls. There are loads of benefits for using VoIP. One of the main benefits is the cost efficiency.
Nowadays VoIP technology is generally used in all offices for making long distance voice calls with real time voice quality at low charges. So, VoIP technology will be the best source for long distance communication up to date. It is more useful for business use too. Using a VoIP phone system will make business sound more professional. VoIP technology will be the trend of future. Already, more than 50 million people and businesses have begun to subscribe to a VoIP phone provider.
