Hello Mi Fans,
Hope you guys are having loads of fun here in Mi Community. We are again back with the Tech Class session. In today's 'Tech Class Chapter' we will know more about WiMAX technology.
What is WiMAX?
WiMAX(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is based on the MAN wireless technology. WiMAX works similar to WiFi, but at higher speeds with greater distances and a great number of users can use it at a time without loss of the internet speed. Its signals basically helpful for the businesses enterprises and the one who travels a lot within the city so that they can stay connected to the internet connectivity wherever they move within the 40 miles radius but with the WIFi it's not possible as the user once leaves the WIFI range then the internet connection will be disconnected this makes WiMAX an step ahead. WiMAX network range might be able to cover a whole building or a whole city it depends upon the placement of the base tower. The major advantage is it's connected across the place without any cables like one with the WLAN. It comes with the specification of IEEE 802.16.
Types of WiMAX service
There are two types of services,
NLOS WiMAX Services
Non-line-of-sight service is similar to WiFi. NLOS WiMAX works on lower frequencies from 2 GHz to 11 GHz. The lower frequency spectrum doesn’t have problems with physical obstructions like tall buildings and atmospheric conditions which causes issues in the transmission of signals. The range of network is about 25 square miles.
LOS WiMAX Services
With the line-of-sight service, there is a fixed antenna which points directly to the WiMAX tower. This type of WiMAX uses higher frequency range from 10 to 66 GHz. Here there are higher speeds and less interference. The range of the network is about 2800 square miles.
How it works?
WiMAX network connectivity consists of two parts one which emits the signals and another one to receive the signals.WiMAX basically turns many of the small hotspots from the different location into a huge wireless hotspot network.
WiMAX base station:
At the base station were signals are broadcasted and the tower works the same as the GSM network tower in the air to send radio signals. Each base station can cover up to a 10Km radius. Theoretically, it can go up to 50Km but due to the geographical factors and building structures, it is limited to 10 Km. The connection is made from the base station to the core network. Several other base stations can be connected using a high-speed microwave link across the location.
WiMAX Receiver station:
The signals are received from the base station and they are received either through the antenna or PCMCIA slot card for the laptop or desktop and the connection process is the same as WLAN setup.
Difference between WiMAX and WIFI
Both the WiFi and WiMAX has a similar use of giving internet connectivity using IEEE standards but with different capabilities, Let's see the difference between them.
WiMAX signals are the arrival of the next generation of wireless data technologies. It took lead by overcoming the short range and data usage of WIFI. It took lead by overcoming the short range and data usage of WIFI. As the broadband connectivity increases, day by day users will start moving to the newer technology knowing all the benefits of the WiMAX this could increase the significant growth in the telecom industry.
