Dear Mi Fans,

How do you Define a Moment?

a quantity that expresses the average or expected value of the first, second, third, or fourth power of the deviation of each component of a frequency distribution from a given value, typically mean or zero. The first moment is the mean, the second moment the variance, the third moment the skew, and the fourth moment the kurtosis.

a very brief period of time.

How do you Define a FAN Moment?

The person / character / source of inspiration is right there in front of you & you are dumbstruck. You have lost your words. Your vocabulary has come to an end.

Timeline of a FAN MOMENT - Lasts a lifetime!

How do you define a FANBOY or a FANGIRL?

To state it in a simple way, a true fan is someone who supports his team/interests/role-model through thick and thin., whether they win or lose, they stand by them. Yes, they have the right to criticise but wins and losses needs to be criticised, not just when they lose.

A fandom is supposed to bring people together not keep them apart.

It was a serene pleasant Bangalore evening of May 8th. “The” Boss, Mr. Lei Jun was in town & there was a buzz among the Xiaominions. With the help of Gitansh Anand we were able to gather close to 40 fans spread across Bangalore. It was 7.30 pm & all the Mi Fans were escorted to a big room which can accommodate upto 100 people.

The room was a mix & match of both worlds - employees & fans - both. Slowly there was the entry of all these people

  • Lei Jun, Chairman, CEO and Founder at Xiaomi Technology

  • Xiang Wang, Senior Vice President at Xiaomi Technology

  • Manu Kumar Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India

  • Xiaoshuang Li, MiTV

Can you imagine the combination of all these people in one room. The room was filled with energy & positive aura. It was just like an unopened shaken bottle of champagne waiting to pop out. The thing about champagne, you say, unfoiling the cork, unwinding the wire restraint, is that is the ultimate associative object. Every time you open a bottle of champagne, it's a celebration, so there's no better way of starting a celebration than opening a bottle of champagne. Every time you sip it, you're sipping from all those other celebrations. The joy accumulates over time.

The forum was open & the questions were asked:

  • When can we expect a premium flagship device in India when compared to global markets?

    • The import duty is almost none to zero in other countries, hence, it is easier for us to introduce those phones in different markets. However, India will soon see a premium phone within the next 6 months. However, when it comes to India, the import duties are almost 40 - 45% which will contradict the vision of the company to make the smartphones cheaper.

  • What are the challenges in India when you compare it to China in terms of launching a device/product?

    • There are a few challenges. There is room to improve when you look at the manufacturing efficiencies here. While labour cost is cheaper in India, the ‘Make in India’ programme is yet to emerge as a competitor to China. It rather faces more challenge from countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. We need more policies to encourage the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

  • Mr. Lei Jun mentioned that the Indian market is the most important market for us, outside China, and we have also been making a profit here for the last two-to three years. In our early days in India, I used to spend at least a week here every quarter. We have an outstanding team in India, and today employ nearly 1,000 people on direct payroll. As we move forward, we plan to have more factories here along with our partners, while increasing our investments in the ecosystem and startups.

  • He mentioned that They are proud of how Xiaomi has grown over the years & how it has been working hard to cater to its fans like us the affordable smartphones. He asked us to understand that since Xiaomi is still in its tweenage, it needs more time to acknowledge & fulfill the ever growing demand of these products globally!

  • One of the fan asked about the screen types & they did consider the request to have amoled on phones.

  • The main question - why does MIUI have ads/advertisements?

    • Mr. Lei Jun said - Before we went public last year (with an IPO), we had said after a board meeting that hardware margins for us will never be more than 5%. If anyone was charged more than this, the excess money would be returned to the customer. However, last year, the net income for hardware (devices) was less than 1% for us. This is very strenuous, it is very difficult to operate a company like this. On the other hand, the net income from internet services was at $2.5 billion last year, it did very well. Hence, ads are part of their business model as they have families to feed but we will give options to see if we can remove it from unwanted places.

  • He showed us his wireless power bank & said he will be getting this wireless technology soon to India. He is looking forward to ensure that India also gets these products as early as possible. It’s just the dynamics for manufacturing & taxes & approvals need a lot of effort.

  • Xiaomi intends to open a Research & Development centre, here in India but they are working on it.

  • He showed us the MI 9 with RUOK case & asked how many of us charge their phones before sleeping or going to bed?

    • I was the one who raised my hand & all others said they do it when they are awake.
    • Why, asked Mr. Lei Jun?

      • Most of us said it is because we are worried that the battery would get spoilt. He assured us that once the phone is charged to 100% it stops charging & we should not be worried about overcharging. That “FEAR” used to lurk a decade ago!

  • He gave us an example of Mi A1 which was a an instant hit in China due to its slim size. However, he was surprised to find out that India did not welcome the phone as he had expected because the battery capacity was less. Since we Indians need bigger screen, better battery capacity - the thickness of the phone increases. However, he did mention that he would like to keep the capacity of batteries at 3800 ~ 4000 mA-h

We asked about a lot of phones & voiced out our expectations, it was all acknowledged. However, they were tight-lipped about what was going to happen next.

By then, it was time - When asked about what should India expect - MI 9 or POCO f2 or (rumored)Redmi X - He shook my hand firmly & with a bright smile, said “Thank you…”
Walked away with his band of soldiers! That was a walk of pride!

We all followed Mr. Manu Jain to the reception area for a group photo

This was followed by goodies arranged by Mi Community - Gitansh spearheading this event.

Again they were kind enough to arrange dinner for the fans who attended the event exclusive by invite.

A special shoutout to this fan - Shrinath - who flew all the way from Sikkim amidst his vacation just for a day to attend this event. Now that’s a Fan, and that was a fan Moment for him.
