This week we will introduce you with the short checklist that will help you quickly get started for your first encounter with MIUI and later you can continue your exploration of tons of features and customization MIUI has to offer.
Quick Start Guide To MIUI
A) Change Installation Settings
By default MIUI will block the external app package installation for security reasons, so if you try to install the *.apk package directly it will get fail and hence you need to take responsibility to change that settings, Open settings - additional settings - privacy - unknown sources - on
B) MI Mover - move stuff from old android device without hassle
If you are moving from another android device then you might want to move stuff without hassle, for that purpose you can use mi mover app of miui, you can get that from here. You have to install that in your old device, for mi device it is already pre installed at settings - additional settings - mi mover, so just follow along the on screen instructions.
C) MIUI Backup & Reset
If you are moving from another mi device and had created local backup then you might want to restore that. Open MIUI explorer app and copy your previously created backup folder to this path /MIUI/backup/AllBackup/ then restore it from settings - additional settings - backup & reset.
D) MIUI Cloud Backup
If you were using MI phone and already were using cloud based backup then you can restore those apps with app data, headover to tools folder - Mi account app - backup device - manage backup - restore. Also by default it will be on to take backup on cloud so you might want to turn it off and save some data/bandwidth. In addition to that you might want to review which items you want to backup/sync or not from Mi account app.
E) Contacts Restore & Display preference
If you were using any of the listed methods you will have your contacts by now, but if you are old school or the previous phone wasn’t smartphone then you might want to import the contacts via *.vcf file method. Place your exported contacts vcf file from your old phone to the storage of new phone in root path then open settings - system apps - contacts - import/export contacts - import from storage.
F) Change Status Bar Behaviour
The top most horizontal area where you see app icons, charge and network icons is called status bar. The default settings won’t show you icons for the app which issued notification and also won’t show you network speed, so you have to change it. Along with that you might want to personalize your battery icon & rest of the stuff, change them from settings - Notification & status bar:
G) Change Display Text Size
If the size of text on display isn’t pleasing enough for your attention then you might want to change it from settings - display - text size, the default one is small.
H) Screen Lock & Display Sleep Time
Screen lock timeout decides after how much time the password should be initiated while the display sleep time will decide when the display will go off, manage them from:
I) Automatic Call recording & Backup
MIUI offers inbuilt facility to record calls automatically & to back them up on cloud for hassle free management and anytime availability, by default the feature will be turned off. You can enable it from settings - installed apps - call settings - call recording - record calls automatically - enable, the backing up on cloud can be managed from mi account app - other syncing items - recorder.
J) Backup Photos - Gallery Settings
By default MIUI gallery will backup of all the photos you take from camera app and replace the original version of Images with thumbnails unless you change these settings. If you like to keep it only in local storage or you are a fan of google photos instead then you can change this behaviour from settings - gallery - turn off backup photos automatically.
K) Autostarting of Apps on boot & Presence in RAM
Security app is like a swiss knife of MIUI. Among the many features it contains, one is auto-start management which helps you to keep (and limit) the apps in RAM when the phone starts and after. We advise you to carefully select only those app which requires active background presence and network permissions for example, instant messaging apps like Whatsapp, Messenger, hike etc. Not only it will serve you extra RAM but will also help you in maintaining lag free experience by cutting extra processing. Manage it from Security app - permissions - permissions - autostart.
L) Daily Maintenance
MIUI security app contains inbuilt junk cleaner & multi definitive antivirus, which will help you keep the phone junk and virus free, so do check it out too. For deeper cleaning use deep clean option under security app.
M) Dual apps & Second space
MIUI 8 comes with these unique features, if you want to use two account of the same app then use dual app and if you want to set up the whole new user environment for all the apps with second account then use second space, it’s like having the two devices, enable them from security app.
N) Auto-updation of Apps
By default google play store will auto-update all the apps on it’s own, if you are on mobile data then you might want to review that settings from play store app - settings.
O) Further Customization
P) App lock
Located under security app, this will help you keep your privacy intact in day to day tasks by locking the important apps with password (you can use your fingerprint too)
It is highly recommended to add mi account for recovery purpose under privacy protection password settings, located under settings - Lockscreen and password - PPP settings
