This one has been a long time coming for millions of Mi Fans. Mi TV update for older Mi TV 4A 32 and 43-inch 2018 models. We have over a million of such customers that have been waiting and asking for updates.
In fact, we have read every single comment that you wrote on our Mi TV India Facebook and Twitter timelines. There are several reasons why this delay occurred. At Xiaomi, we strive to be as transparent as we can and share honest information with our Mi Fans.
The delay happened because of intertwined reasons. Some of them were for the good, but nobody could comprehend as it was not shared in public. The biggest challenge for any team is resources, its all about optimizing the time to work on new products, continue R&D efforts and also support something that is very unusual in the TV industry.
Mi TV update for 4A series required much more than just developing a ROM and pushing it from OTA servers. This required multiple exceptions from various levels across different organizations.
Chances of soft brick - Updating ROM especially when it's based on Android 6 images to latest one involves various stages. If electricity goes off during this process which involves multiples stages to flash, the TV will get soft bricked. This will require a service engineer to physically get the Mi TV and flash using laptop + USB male-male cables.
CPU - Amlogic support. There was a substantial work required to support new Android TV based ROMs. These chips needed extended engineering work to support new Android TV images which are 7 or above. We would like to extend our gratitude to all engineers who worked tirelessly to make this update possible.
Android TV - Android TV requires certain guidelines to be eligible to support Android TV ROM. We had to go the extra mile and do what was the right thing to do. We are very glad that we managed to do which seemed impossible at one point. We would like to express our gratitude to the entire team at Android TV for all the support and being an amazing partner in helping us in our quest to bring ‘Innovation for everyone’. Thank you.
Android TV brings you a lot of product features.
Please note: Google Assistant won't work directly on these Mi TVs, as these TVs don't support BLE and hence no voice remote support directly. However you could use your Android phones or Google Home devices to play movies etc over chromecast protocol.
Android 9.0 vs 8.0 - When we started the work on the update, we had to make a decision to either start working on available 8 based images or skip and wait for Android 9 Pie based images which were going to be available later. We decided to skip Android 8 update and we think that was the right decision. The only problem was that this was going to take more time.
Yes, we have builds ROMs on Android 9 Pie images, which is the latest build available for Smart TVs. As a matter of fact, we will be the first TV brand in the country to roll out Android 9 update for our Mi TVs. When other brands are releasing new TVs based on Android 8.0, we have already started testing Android 9 Pie. We are very happy to share that our Mi Fans will get the all the latest and best of Android features including security features for Mi TV 4A 32, 43 that were bought in 2018.
Our engineers have been working diligently to ensure Android 9 Pie builds are stable and I would like to thank each one of them for all the work and effort they put behind the scenes to ensure Mi TV is on latest security patches, setting new benchmarks in the TV industry.
Once again we are extremely thankful for all your patience and support. We have started testing the new build and as a part of this program, we would like to invite Mi Fans to help us test the early builds to help us reach stable builds as soon as we can.
