Hey Mi Fans,
Probably starting up with my first thread which will be revolving around "Why The things The Way They Are"! Common everyday things which have some thoughtful reasoning behind their designs.
Keyboard - The board with many keys used by all of us! Where alphabets are not arranged alphabetically Strange, isn't it? Ever imagined what could be a possible reason for this, as if it would be alphabetically it would be easier to all of us, right?
So, dating back since the typewriter era where there were keyboards firstly designed alphabetically by the inventor of typewriter Christopher Sholes. But there's always other side of the coin and here it was, due to the arrangement of alphabets in a row the typists when typed speedily over time the mechanical character keys used to jam very easily and the machine couldn't handle it as the metal bars attached to letters lay closely, gets entangled with one another very easily. So, the inventor himself struggled for five years to bring a solution by trial and error methods. He succeeded this by placing the alphabets on their letter-pair frequency i.e increasing the distance between alphabets commonly used. Example: AN, ON are most frequently occurring pair of letters and placed at a distance. He gave the name "QWERTY Keyboard" to this design which contains the first six letters of the top row. So, it is believed that jamming was prevented because typist speed was slowed down but actually the typist speed was speeded up by such arrangement and it prevented jamming.
After this since 1860's, QWERTY keyboard came into existence and we all use it till date! But But But, the story doesn't end here, do you think only there would be one design existing? Is QWERTY Keyboard the best? There must be another better alternative to it. Yes, there is more than one design existing which is believed better than QWERTY Keyboard developed by a psychologist Dr August Dvorak in 1936 and known as "Dvorak Keyboard" which is simplified, requires less finger motion, reduces the error rate and increases typing speed.
The designed proposed by Dvorak failed to come into the mainstream, and overtake the widely used QWERTY Keyboard as the people by then learned how to use it and were' unwilling to learn the new keyboard though it was better and more efficient. It is considered a tech failure as people didn't want to change the old one because they were more familiar with it.
I hope you guys liked it and I would love to have more questions on the common things which have not so common reason behind their designs!
Before wrapping up, let's make your brains do some thinking -
Can you guess answers to this question without using the help of internet, books, friends! Just write what you feel could be the possible answers and after few days, I will update them here.
1. What could be the fastest number of words written per minute?
2. What is the most used key on the keyboard?
3. Are keyboards only available in the rectangular shape?
