HI MI FANS,|
Today I'm back with yet another informative tech thread. This thread is all about the Theatre Technologies. You might have heard about the terms in the banner before, if you are a movie lover. The technologies in theatres mainly includes Satelitte Technologies , Sound Technologies & Projection Technologies. In this thread i have covered about some of the popular Satelitte Technologies & some of the popular Sound Technologies. So lets get started with this thread.

Digital cinema refers to the use of digital technology to distribute or project motion pictures as opposed to the historical use of reels of motion picture film, such as 35 mm film. Whereas film reels have to be shipped to movie theaters, a digital movie can be distributed to cinemas in a number of ways: over the Internet or dedicated satellite links, or by sending hard drives or optical discs such as Blu-ray discs. Digital movies are projected using a digital video projector instead of a film projector.
Digital cinema is distinct from high-definition television and does not necessarily use traditional television or other traditional high-definition video standards, aspect ratios, or frame rates. In digital cinema, resolutions are represented by the horizontal pixel count, usually 2K (2048×1080 or 2.2 megapixels) or 4K (4096×2160 or 8.8 megapixels). As digital-cinema technology improved in the early 2010s, most of the theaters across the world converted to digital video projection.
Some of the leading satelitte based digital cinemas in India includes UFO digital cinema . UFO digital cinema & PXD digital cinema have compressed format where as other projections has uncompressed format. So lets see more about UFO digital cinema & PXD digital cinema below.
UFO DIGITAL CINEMA
UFO Moviez India Limited is India’s largest digital cinema distribution network and in-cinema advertising platform (in terms of numbers of screens). UFO operates India’s largest satellite-based, digital cinema distribution network using its UFO-M4 platform, as well as India’s largest D-Cinema network. UFO Moviez is a pioneer in the electronic delivery of digitized full length feature films and content in theatres via satellite and has transformed the way content is distributed and exhibited across geographies.
UFO has also contributed to the revival of single screen cinemas in India and its secure technology has substantially reduced Piracy. Most importantly, UFO has ensured that audiences have ‘day of release’ access to films everywhere. UFO Moviez has so far released more than 11000 films in 22 languages, on its UFO M4-Platform & DCI Network and has conducted over 21 million shows. As on 30 June 2017, UFO Moviez' global network, along with its subsidiaries and associates, spans 6,852 screens worldwide, including 5,390 screens across India & Nepal and 1,462 screens across the Middle East.
Sound Technology in cinema is a technique for enriching the sound reproduction quality of an audio source with additional audio channels from speakers that surround the listener (surround channels). Its first application was in movie theaters. Prior to surround sound, standard theater sound systems had three "screen channels" of sound, emitted by loudspeakers located only in front of the audience: at the left, center, and right. One of the best Sound technology used today is Dolby Atmos. Lets see more about dolby atmos beow.
Dolby Atmos is the name of a Sound Technology announced by Dolby Laboratories in April 2012 and released in June that year, first utilized in Disney and Pixar's animated film Brave. Other notable Dolby Atmos films are Gravity, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, La La Land and Hacksaw Ridge. Speakers can be placed along walls, in ceilings and even behind the screen itself in order to totally immerse an audience in sound. From everywhere. Up to 64 speakers can be used in a Dolby Atmos cinema, but in a domestic environment it's unlikely you'll have the room (or the will) to house such a speaker.

Another benefit is the flexibility it offers theatre owners to show the movies you most want to see when you most want to see them. Traditional film prints arrive in canisters, and an exhibitor must order a separate print for each auditorium showing a film. For theatres equipped with Dolby Digital Cinema, distribution can occur via satellite, high-speed Internet connection, or hard drive, so an exhibitor always has access to the latest movies. When a line starts forming to see a surprise hit, you stand a better chance of finding a seat.

Projection Technology is an opto-mechanical device for displaying motion picture film by projecting it onto a screen. Most of the optical and mechanical elements, except for the illumination and sound devices, are present in movie cameras. Some of the most popular digital projector manufactures are IMAX, SONY, REALD 3D.
IMAX PROJECTION TECHNOLOGY
IMAX is a 70 mm motion picture film format and a set of cinema projection standards developed in Canada in the late 1960s and early 1970s by Graeme Ferguson, Roman Kroitor, Robert Kerr, and William C. Shaw. IMAX has the capacity to record and display images of far greater size and resolution than conventional film systems. Unlike conventional projectors, the film is run horizontally so that the image width is greater than the width of the film. Below is the image of an IMAX projector.
Since 2002, some feature films have been converted into IMAX format for displaying in IMAX theatres and some have also been partially shot in IMAX. IMAX is the most widely used system for special-venue film presentations. As of June 2017, there were 1,257 IMAX theatres in 75 countries.
SONY 4K PROJECTION TECHNOLOGY
4K means detail, and lots of it. A 4K picture projected on a cinema screen contains an incredible 4096 × 2160 pixels (or tiny dots). That’s over 8 megapixels, or four times the number of pixels on your Full HD TV at home. And all that detail cinema pictures projected in Sony 4K look amazing, with incredible contrast and colour.
Sony Corporation (often referred to simply as Sony) is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Kōnan, Minato, Tokyo. Its diversified business includes consumer and professional electronics, gaming, Film entertainment and financial services. The company is one of the leading manufacturers of electronic products for the consumer and professional markets. Sony was ranked 105th on the 2017 list of Fortune Global 500.
REALD 3D PROJECTION TECHNOLOGY
RealD 3D is a digital stereoscopic projection technology made and sold by RealD. It is currently the most widely used technology for watching 3D films in theatres. Worldwide, RealD 3D is installed in more than 26,500 auditoriums by approximately 1,200 exhibitors in 72 countries as of June 2016.
RealD 3D cinema technology is a polarized 3D system that uses circularly polarized light to produce stereoscopic image projection. The advantage of circular polarization over linear polarization is that viewers are able to tilt their head and look about the theater naturally without seeing double or darkened images. However, as with other systems, any significant head tilt will result in incorrect parallax and prevent the brain from correctly fusing the stereoscopic images.
Qube Cinema is a California corporation that manufactures digital cinema servers, integrated media blocks (IMBs) and Digital Cinema Package (DCP) creation software. With the transformation of the majority of theatres from film-based to digital cinema, Qube is one of the companies that provides servers and IMBs to commercial and institutional theatres.
Qube Cinema was the first to demonstrate that 4K 3D digital cinema could be streamed from a single server to multiple synchronized projectors. Qube's servers are currently used in Giant Screen theatres that have made the switch from 70 mm film to digital 3D. Their digital cinema mastering products convert still images, Flash animations, and QuickTime movies into a Digital Cinema Package that can then be streamed through a server and into a projector.
