Xiaomi launched Redmi Note 5 Pro last month and we all know it is a Beast when it comes to the camera in its segment. The camera on Redmi Note 5 Pro is one of the highly talked about topic and it even challenges many of the other smartphones which are from a higher segment. One of the most important features of this camera is the Portrait mode. We have seen that it captures mindblowing portraits. This post is about this Portrait mode and how a recent change actually takes it one step backwards.
The recent MIUI Update (V22.214.171.124) changed the way the Portrait mode works on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. There are two observations I would like to discuss here:
1. Portrait Zoom
Now, when you open the Camera in Portrait mode, the Object/Subject gets zoomed in. This is the same behaviour that's there on Mi A1 (which was great on A1).
However here on Redmi Note 5 Pro, this actually degrades the quality of the picture. Mi A1 had a Telephoto lens which helped in lossless zooming thereby keeping the quality intact; whereas Redmi Note 5 Pro doesn't have a Telephoto lens to give that lossless zoom. And since it works on Digital zoom here, the final output is slightly grainy and not as great as it used to be.
(1 - Normal Mode, 2 - Portrait Mode)2. 12MP to 5MP
Prior to V126.96.36.199 Update, photos taken from rear camera (both normal mode & portrait mode) were of the same resolution (4000 x 3000 px), which indicated the use of the 12MP sensor at the rear.
But after the update, this has changed. Normal mode pics still come in 4000 x 3000 px resolution, but the Portrait mode pics are in 2752 x 2064 px, which indicates the use of the 5MP camera. Why is it like that?
(1 - Normal Mode, 2 - Portrait Mode)
These two things may be connected and interdependent. Maybe because of the usage of the 5MP sensor, the images are zoomed in.
(I have attached original images to this thread which proves these observations)
The reply we usually receive is that it's by design. But what's the point, if the quality is degraded and it gives a bad user experience?
So, It's a request to Xiaomi India to revert this change and make it how it was earlier. Allow Portrait mode pics to be captured by the 12MP sensor, and remove this zoom-in feature for Portrait mode completely on Redmi Note 5 Pro. Also, if at all a zoom-in feature is required, give the users an option to Enable/Disable this default zoom. And possibly set the Zoom option to OFF by default.
To All Mi Fans,
We know that Xiaomi listens to their Mi Fans, and take their feedback seriously.
If you agree with these observations, please vote* on this thread, give your feedback on this topic and make your voice heard.
I hope Xiaomi India notices this and take the right steps to ensure we get best quality pictures and the best UX.
