Hi Mi Fans,
Welcome to Tech Class hosted by Device Team to provide Mi Fans and enthusiasts a detailed knowledge about technology around the world. Today, I am going to explain About “GLONASS” and it's working. So if you haven't yet checked the last Tech Class, [Check Out Here]

So Let's Get Started with Meaning
GLONASS is the Russian Version of GPS, it's Acronym for Global Navigation Satellite System (originally: Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema)
Its Development was started in 1976 by Soviet Union of Russia and Became the most expensive project ever by Russian Federal Space Agency acquiring ⅓ of its Budget in the year 2010.

Various versions Of GLONASS
1. GLONASS – launched in 1982, the satellites launched were intended to work for weather positioning, velocity measuring and timing anywhere in the world or near-Earth space by the military and official organisations.
2. GLONASS-M – launched in 2003 add second civil code. It is important for GIS mapping receivers.
3. GLONASS-k – started in 2011 again has 3 more types namely k1, k2 and km for research. Adds third civil frequency.
4. GLONASS-K2 – will be launched after 2015 (currently in design phase)
5. GLONASS-KM – will be launched after 2025 (currently in research phase)

How is GLONASS different from GPS?

GPS developed by the USA has been widely used in commercial devices like mobile phones, navigators etc. GPS uses 31 Satellite System Covering the whole planet.
GLONASS, as Discussed before, is Russian Version of GPS developed by the Soviet Union which uses 24 Satellite System Covering the Planet.

GLONASS is more accurate whereas GPS has wide Coverage but if both are used simultaneously accuracy and coverage can be used better. Even the Location can be pinpointed if both are used. The first Device to use both GLONASS and GPS was iPhone 4S.

What's There is Your Smartphone?
As the capabilities of Both were recognized. Almost all High-end Smartphone has them.Normally all devices use A-GPS with Support to A-GLONASS (not available widely) which uses Device Network Connection to determine Location. As GLONASS 's Service is being made public, more and more Smartphone manufacturers are using a cluster of GPS+GLONASS for better positioning, accuracy, and coverage. We can Expect That All Smartphones will use this Technology To determine location which will include the cluster of 24+31 Satellite System.

All Smartphones Launched After Xiaomi 2 have GLONASS Support

Google Maps Use This Technology by using the Data Connection To Connect To The Satellite System and Get Real Time Information.
