Today we will learn about LED TVs, its advantages, and features. The LED TVs are a more advanced version of LCD TVs. LED TVs are slimmer, brighter, and more detailed than the traditional LCD TV.
What is an LED TV?
An LED TV is a flat panel display that uses an array of light-emitting diodes as pixels for a video display in place of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL) used in most of the LCD TVs.
How LED Emits Light?
LEDs consist of small semiconductors, it is a p–n junction diode which glows during exposure to electric current. When a suitable current flows between LED anodes, which are positively charged electrodes, and LED cathodes, which are negatively charged electrodes, electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence.
When current is passed from LED, electrons gain energy and move from one semiconductor material to another material and come back to their original position. This process continues until current flow is present. While coming back to the original state, electrons release the energy they gained in the form of light.
The color is determined by the energy released as the energy release is in the form of photons and emits light. In general, the color combinations of LED are determined by RGB and for Red color Gallium-aluminium arsenide (AlGaAs), for Green color Gallium phosphide (GaP) and for Blue color Silicium carbide (SiC) semiconductor materials are used.
There are two primary forms of LED lighting technology that LED TVs can utilize: Full-Array LED backlighting and Edge-Lit LED backlighting.
Edge-Lit LED backlighting
In the Edge-Lit LED backlighting, the LEDs can be all around the screen or only on the sides or the bottom, facing in toward the screen. It uses light guides or light diffusers to channel the light to the rest of the screen. The advantage of this method is that the LED TV can be made very thin.
The disadvantage of Edge lighting is that black levels are not as deep and the edge area of the screen has a tendency to be brighter than the center area of the screen.
Full-Array LED backlighting
In a Full-Array LED backlighting, the LEDs are distributed evenly behind the entire screen, all pointing out towards the screen. The lights are arranged in blocks, rather than rows. With the use of Local Dimming, the Full-Array method provides a more even, uniform, black level across the entire screen surface. Each LED or a selected "zone" of LEDs can be turned on and off independently within the screen, thus providing greater control of the brightness and darkness for each of those areas. In other words, the greater level of dimming control, the better the picture quality.
What is Local Dimming?
Local dimming is a feature used in Full-Array LED backlighting and Edge-Lit LED backlighting TVs. Local dimming can dim the parts of the screen that should be dark while keeping the bright parts of the screen brightness. It increases the contrast ratio to make a better image. This results in an improved picture quality with much better black levels and a more uniform picture across the LCD panel.
Full-array LED TV has superior picture quality, but edge-lit sets have one major advantage: Depth. Edge-lit LEDs TVs can be much thinner.
